Trump's Daughter and North Korean High General Can Face Off in PyeongChang
Daughter of US President Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump will lead the US delegation at the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea on Sunday.
Ivanka, who is also a senior adviser to her father, will be joined by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who will give special support to female athletes competing in the Games.
"Sarah goes as a woman to help cheer all female athletes and highlight women's sports and the success that our female athletes have had at this year's Olympics," said a
White House.
Other members of the US delegation include Idaho Senator Jim Risch and US Army National Guard and Olympic Bobsled Medalist Shauna Rohbock.
"I have the honor of leading the US delegation at the closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang," said Ivanka Trump.
"We look forward to congratulating the US team and celebrating everything our athletes have achieved. Talent, strength, weight and spirit embody American excellence and inspire us all."
The main goal of the delegation is to highlight the achievements of the American athletes in the Olympics and reaffirm US cooperation with the host of the Games, South Korea.
Meeting possible?
The 36-year-old presidential advisor will be dining with South Korean President Moon Jae-in during her three-day visit to South Korea.
But what is drawing a lot of attention will be about the position of the US delegation vis-à-vis the representatives of North Korea, with whom the US has always exchanged threats of war.
At the opening of the Games on February 9, US Vice President Mike Pence sat next to the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Yo-jong. There was the possibility of a meeting of him with North Korean officials, but Pyongyang gave up at the last minute, according to the White House.
For the closing ceremony, the eight-member delegation from North Korea will be headed by Kim Yong-chol, a senior general responsible for inter-Korean affairs. It is believed he had planned several attacks against South Korea, including against the 'Cheonan' ship in 2010, which killed 46 sailors.
According to the South Korean press, there is an expectation of a meeting between Ivanka and the North Korean general, marking the first meeting of senior officials of the two countries in years. For now, there is no official event planned in this regard.
The end of the Games will also call into question the sequence of relations between the two Koreas, which have been reconnected this year, due to the Olympic event on South Korean soil. The resumption of joint exercises between the US and South Korea and Pyongyang's resistance to freezing its nuclear program will put pressure on diplomacy.
