US governor indicted for taking 'nude' and attempting to blackmail lover
The governor of Missouri, in the United States, was accused on Thursday of an invasion of privacy for taking pictures of his former mistress in a possible case of blackmail.
Eric Greitens was signed and released after a grand jury issued the accusation that he tried to blackmail the woman with whom he had an affair.
He even admitted his involvement before assuming his current position in 2015.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper, the governor threatened to publish the photos in the event his extramarital involvement was made public.
"It's essential that the residents of St. Louis and our state have confidence in their leaders," St. Louis prosecutor Kimberly Gardner said in a statement.
The registration was made without consent, according to the indictment documents.
The head of the Missouri Executive Branch says he will not resign and deny the allegations. Greitens' lawyer says the charges are "unfounded" and calls for the closure of the case.
"There was no blackmail, there was no violence, the mistake I made was having a consensual relationship with a woman who was not my wife," the governor told KTVI.
The hearing of witnesses in the case will begin on March 16.
