Meryl Streep says his comment 'we're all Africans' has been distorted
Actress Meryl Streep said on Thursday (25) that a comment made by her, "we are all Africans" had been taken out of context, to write to the site "Huffington Post" on the controversy created amid controversy diversity in Hollywood.
Streep, who this month for the first time led the international film jury at the Berlin Film Festival, said his comments to an Egyptian reporter during an interview on the familiarity of it with the cinema of Africa and the Middle East had been "distorted".
"I was not minimizing differences, but emphasizing the invisible connection that enables empathy, such a central thing to being human, and what art can do: convey to another person's experience," he wrote the actress.
The controversy over the review takes place amid protests about the fact that only actors and white actresses have been nominated for the Oscar for the second consecutive year.
The actress said in his text, whose title was "Setting The Record Straight" (explaining the story, in free translation), it was not questioned in the interview about the jury made only by white people at the festival this year.
"I do not 'defended' the 'all white jury' or defend if I had been questioned in this regard. Inclusion of races, genders, ethnicities and religions, it is important for me, as I stated at the beginning of the press conference," he said she.
The comments from the winner of three Oscars, one of the most admired actresses of her generation, quickly became viral and reached headlines around the world.
Streep said she hoped that the attention attracted by his "misinterpreted comments" were directed to celebrate the winners of the Berlin Festival this year, including "Fire At Sea" Gianfranco Rosi on African immigrants.
