Putin's visit to Syria is 'a shock to the West'
Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Syria to give a partial troop withdrawal order is a gesture for those doubting Russia, a Russian political scientist said. Moscow hit its main target in Syria despite all gloomy predictions.
"The Russian president put an end to the Daesh [the terrorist organization banned in Russia]. The most violent armed groups were defeated by the Syrian Army, the Russian Aerospace Force and the Iranian volunteers ... The next phase, I believe, will be the truce resolution peaceful and the pursuit of compromise, "geopolitical expert Araik Stepanyan said in an interview with a local radio station.
At the same time, the role of the international coalition led by the US was minimal and was also very different from the Russian operation.
Moscow "eliminated terrorism", saved the integrity of the Syrian state and the legitimacy of its power, as well as "pushed the opposition parties to the negotiating table," he added.
As for the withdrawal of troops, the Russian expert supposes that a part of the Aerospace Force will stay in the country "for the emergencies". In addition, the sappers continue demining actions of the Syrian settlements. Reconciliation Center officials and military police will also continue their work.
Western countries will try to turn a blind eye to Putin's surprise visit.
"For the mainstream media, organizing a media show, for example, a visit by the US president to Afghanistan, is only his prerogative .... Now they will criticize Putin's trip or claim that Russia's role was' tiny. "A large part will try to silence him, basically," Stepanyan estimated.
The fact that the Russian president has come to Syria to declare victory over Daesh "is a shock to them." This means that all Western analysts' predictions of a "swamp" or "Syrian trap" for Russia have not come true.
Moscow has shown that even with a limited military presence, it can achieve important successes, the expert concluded.
