The US Preventive Priorities report, drafted by the Council on Foreign Relations and published on Monday (11), highlights eight possible world clashes of major importance to the US in 2018.

The probability of six such conflicts, in which Washington should focus, is estimated to be "moderate", although the impact is "high." In this group are the tensions around North Korea, which could trigger "a military conflict between the USA, North Korea and its neighboring countries".

Americans do not exclude "deliberate and unintentional military confrontation between Russia and NATO members because of Russia's steadfast attitude in Eastern Europe."

Also mentioned are cyber attacks against critical infrastructure and US networks, US armed conflict and its allies with Iran, battle in the South China Sea between the Asian giant and other countries in the region for disputed territories and terrorist attack with high number of victims in the US, as well as in the soil of its allies.

The "violent consolidation of government control in Syria with high tensions between the external parties to the conflict" and the growing violence and instability in Afghanistan because of Taliban activity enter the US "high-probability" list, impact of these conflicts is "moderate," the report said.
