Japanese journalist found guilty of defaming South Korean President

A Japanese journalist was today found guilty of defaming the President of South Korea, with a story about his whereabouts after the sinking of a ferry with over 300 people on board, mostly students.

The article suggested that South Korean President Park Geun-Hye, single, had disappeared for some time for a date with a former aide.

Tatsuya Kato was found guilty of defaming Park in an article based on "unfounded rumors" according to a Seoul court.

The libel is punishable by up to seven years in prison in South Korea.

The journalist denied the allegations, saying that the purpose of the article was to inform about the perception of public opinion on the Park, after the sinking of the ship, held in April 2014.

The case has exacerbated tensions between Seoul and Tokyo and led a discussion on press freedom in South Korea.
