GENEVA (Reuters) - The number of people forcibly displaced can globally have "exceeded much" a 60 million record this year, mainly due to the conflict in Syria and elsewhere, reported the United Nations (UN) on Friday -market.
The estimate includes 20.2 million refugees fleeing war and persecution, the highest number since 1992, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in a report.
Nearly 2.5 million people seeking asylum have pending requests, with Germany, Russia and the United States getting as many of the nearly 1 million requests in the first half of the year.
"The year 2015 is on course to see the number of hipsters forcibly exceed 60 million worldwide for the first time - 1 in every 122 is now someone who was forced to flee their homes", he said. The number at the end of 2014 was 59.5 million.
"There was never a greater need for tolerance, compassion and solidarity with people who have lost everything," said Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees said in a statement.
