Obama says he supports Turkey's right to defend itself
US President Barack Obama greets Turkish President Recep Erdogan during bilateral meeting in Paris on Tuesday (1st).
The US president, Barack Obama said on Tuesday (1) which supports the right of Turkey to defend itself, after Turkish forces have shot down a plane Russian border war with Syria last week.
Obama made the remarks during a meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, in Paris, where he participates in the UN climate summit.
"The United States supports the right of Turkey to defend itself and also its airspace ... We talked about how Turkey and Russia can work together to defuse tensions and find a diplomatic way to solve the problem," he said.
"We talk like Turkey and Russia can work together to ease tensions and find a diplomatic way to solve it," Obama said.
"We have a common enemy and want to assure myself that we focus on this threat," he emphasized.
Communication with Russia
The Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, called for the morning opening of communication channels between Turkey and Russia to prevent further incidents like the overthrow of war plane. [nL1N13Q0HQ]
Putin, who signed a decree imposing economic sanctions on Turkey because of the incident, said the country toppled the jet because he wanted to protect the oil supplies of the militants of the Islamic State. Erdogan defined as "slander" allegations that Turkey purchases crude oil from the Islamic State.
After the meeting with Obama, Erdogan said the two talked about the Turkish-Russian tensions.
"Our concern is not look bad at it, but instead turn it into peace and contribute to peace in the region," Erdogan said.
