One of the missiles had fallen to 1,500 meters from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman
Iranian warships conducted missile tests near aircraft carriers and other naval vessels in the international coalition, who support air strikes against "Islamic State" in Syria and Iraq, said on Wednesday (30/12) the spokesman for the military command of the United States Kyle Raines.
"These actions were highly provocative, unsafe and unprofessional, and cast doubt on the commitment of Iran about the safety of a major sea route for international trade," said the spokesman.
The missile tests occurred on December 26 in the Strait of Hormuz, near the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, the destroyer USS Bullkeley and a French frigate. According to the spokesman, merchant ships were also nearby.
Raines said Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned to "only 23 minutes in advance" about the tests.
According to Raines, the military exercise was an exception to the safe and professional routine interactions between the Iranian and American forces, and undermine the "freedom of navigation and maritime safety" within the global standards.
A report of the American NBC television network reported that a missile reached only 1,500 meters from the USS Harry S. Truman, who entered the Strait of Hormuz during a routine path.
According to the issuer, an American military said the missile, launched from several small vessels of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, would be unmanageable.
The incident occurred amid thaw in diplomatic relations between the US and Iran, after signing the agreement on Iran's nuclear program between Tehran and the Group 5 + 1, comprising China, USA, France, UK, Russia and Germany.
The agreement provides for the suspension of sanctions hanging over Iran's economy in exchange for restrictions on nuclear activities in the country.
