The Pentagon said on Saturday (26/12) which US forces conducted 17 air strikes on targets of extremist organization "Islamic State" (EI) in Syria and Iraq over the Christmas holiday.
A Pentagon spokesman said five bombings were carried out in Syria and another twelve in Iraq. Americans and the international coalition fighters attacked tunnels, explosives factories and bridges in cities controlled by EI, as well as combat positions of jihadist militias.
The attacks occurred at the same time as allies of the US-led coalition can significant advances in attacks against the EI bastions. Syrian Kurds and Arab rebel groups took up a dam on the Euphrates River, as Iraqi forces continue the offensive to flush out extremist militias in the city of Ramadi.
The spokesman for the Iraqi security services, Sabah al-Nomane, said the country's armed forces are preparing a final assault on Sunday to regain a part of town that is still under the control of jihadists.
According to the spokesman, the soldiers are 300 meters from the headquarters of the provincial government. "We hope to arrive at the scene within 24 hours," he said.
The conquest of Ramadi by EI was one of the most significant defeats the Iraqi government since the Islamist insurgency. The extremists also control Mosul, the second largest city, located between Ramadi and the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
If successful, the resumption of Ramadi - just over 100 kilometers from Baghdad - should be the second biggest success of Iraqi forces, after the reconquest of the city of Tikrit, in April.
Government officials say that after the success of the offensive, the command Ramadi should be delivered to the local police and a Sunni tribe.
