The Regulatory Agency Fertilisation and Embryology authorized British researchers from the London Institute Francis Crick to manipulate human embryos in the laboratory. It is the first time that official organizations of a country authorize the procedure

The objective of the research is to understand more about the first seven days after fertilization of the egg. Thus, the results may help to prevent and combat infertility problems, diseases or miscarriages. According to surveys of Tommy's (institution investigating pregnancy problems) it is estimated that in England between 15 and 20% of pregnancies end because of a miscarriage, and 85% of them happen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Although the studies are released, it is forbidden to change the embryos in the laboratory are implemented in women. Still, critics of genetic manipulation in humans did not like the news. "This is the first step in a path that scientists carefully prepared for the legalization of genetically modified babies," said David King founder of the Human Genetic Alert - organization contrary to genetic interference in humans - when consulted on the release, by the British government, in the last month.

Despite the criticism, the British medical community views the study as a positive. "Genetic Edition may be clinically applied in the future to treat or prevent incurable diseases or genetic problems. It is important that the broad debate continues not only between researchers but also among thinkers discussing ethics, health, regulatory agencies, potential patients and the general population, "said Robert Lechler, president of the Academy of Medical Sciences locations in a statement. The tests are planned for the coming months.
