British prime minister: 2 accused of poisoning Skripal are Russian intelligence officers
The two Russian citizens, suspected of poisoning Sergei and Yulia Skripal in March this year, are officials of the Central Intelligence Agency (GRU), British PM Theresa May said on Wednesday.
"Based on the [UK] intelligence agency, the government has concluded that the two individuals nominated by the British Royal Police and Prosecutor's Office are officers of the Russian military intelligence service, also known as GRU," he stated.
May pointed out that probably the names of the Russian citizens, released by the British police, are pseudonyms.
In addition, Theresa May has demanded that Russia take over the activities of its military intelligence officers and take responsibility for their actions.
"We want Russia to act as a responsible member of the international community. That is, it must take into account the recklessness and outrageous actions of the GRU, which is part of the Russian government," he said.
She said the UK will seek to extend sanctions against Russia in connection with the findings of the investigation into the Salisbury incident.
"We intend to achieve increased sanctions for the use of chemical weapons ... We intend to contact our partners in the European Union and work through the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons," May said.
Russia's Attorney General's Office said it was ready to cooperate with British services and expected to receive evidence of the involvement of Russian citizens, a spokeswoman for the Russian Prosecutor's Office, Aleksandr Kurenoi, told the newsroom.
We continue to insist on working with British services on the case and hope to finally get materials that could prove what our foreign colleagues say they have at their disposal, "he said.
Earlier today, prosecutors in the UK named two Russians suspected of poisoning former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. According to them, the suspects used authentic Russian passports to enter the UK the day before the incident.
