She leaves the telemarketing calls on behalf of a robot.
The idea is simple. It is a software with artificial intelligence that can sense when the other end is silent, and interprets this as a cue to answer. At such times, the computer loose automatic responses, which interact with the attendant: something like a "uhum" or a "clear." At times the robot uses a bit more complex responses like "sorry, I just woke up, I'm a little dizzy, you can repeat the reason for the call?", Not to be so obvious that it is a machine.
The robot works on a phone line. To make it work, the user must activate the function to add a link to the call, dial the machine number (+1 214-666-4321) and pretend you're passing the phone to the clerk who is looking for. Voila, no need to worry. I mean, voila in theory, because the machine conversation in English, then the robot in question is not of much use here in Brazil.
The invention, called The Jolly Roger Telephone Co. (something like Roger Telephone Company Feliz, in Portuguese) was invented by Roger Anderson, an American who for 20 years working with the creation of telephone systems for telecommunications companies. Roger had the idea after his son, 12, was cursed by an attendant. Then decided to put the machines to talk. "Perhaps the telemarketing company take you of their list when they realize that actually are chatting with a robot every time you call you," he said in an interview with Mashable.
Anderson even got to record some of the links. In most cases, the attendants realize that it is a machine and hang up the telephone.
