The two MSNBC journalists Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, who were targeted by personal attacks and insults by Donald Trump on Twitter, questioned on Friday the state of mind of the American president.

"The president's insane obsession with 'Morning Joe' (MSNBC's morning program) does not result in the benefit of his mental state or the country he runs," the two journalists wrote in an opinion piece published in the Washington Post with Title "Trump, please stop watching us".

"The leaders and allies of the United States wonder if this man has the necessary capacity to be president," they continue.

The two also labeled Trump's comments as "schoolyard insults" and accused him of being a liar.

The day before, Trump loudly attacked the program's presenters, a couple in real life, who had made a blunt critique of him.

"I heard the little audience broadcast @Morning Joe speak ill of me (I will not see more)," Trump tweeted.

"Why then did Mad Mika, low IQ, along with mentally ill Joe, come to Mar-a-Lago three nights straight near the end of the year and insisted on seeing me? She was bleeding badly from a face-lift "I said no!" Trump added in a second message.

Mika Brzezinski had just criticized the administration of the Republican president who, according to her, should be seen "as a company."

According to the couple, they were invited by Trump to go to Mar-a-Lago, where they had a pleasant conversation in the presence of his wife Melania.

Trump's message has even provoked protests among Republicans, who fear for the dignity of the presidential function.

"We are convinced that the man is not mentally equipped to continue seeing 'Morning Joe,'" wrote the two journalists, who advised the American president to see "Fox & Friends," a Fox News pro-Trump program.

"It will be better for the United States and the rest of the world," they conclude.
