UK fears Murdoch influence after Sky purchase
The UK government wants to ensure that the Sky group's purchase project by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox does not give the tycoon too much influence over British politics and media, according to a statement on Thursday.
Culture and Communication Minister Karen Bradley has announced in Parliament that she will call for "a second phase of research on plurality of media" before authorizing the transaction.
Bradley said the two sides have until July 14 to come up with proposals on the subject that would avoid such an investigation.
She justified her decision in a report by the Communications Agency, the media regulatory body, which states: "The operation raises public interest concerns about the risk of increasing the influence of Murdoch's company members on the journalistic agenda and the British political process ".
The Murdoch family owns two of Britain's most influential newspapers, The Times and The Sun, through News Corp.
The 21st Century Fox, better known as Fox, is one of Hollywood's biggest movie studios and owner of several television channels. Fox already has 39.1% of the group of British televisions Sky and acquired the totality by 15 billion dollars.
The Murdoch family took control of Sky, which was called BSkyB in 2012, but had to step down amid the wiretapping scandal of its News of the World tabloid, which eventually closed.
The influence of the Murdoch is not well regarded by Sky's shareholders. In October, members who have no relationship with Fox or the family voted not to renew the term of office of James Murdoch, Rupert's son, on the board.
