Capoeira is a Brazilian cultural expression that includes the components martial art, sport, popular culture, dance and music.

It is spread in an oral and gestural way, in the streets and in the academies, as well as the relations of sociability and familiarity built between masters and disciples.

Origin and History

The word "capoeira" denotes "what was killed" by connecting the terms ka'a ("mata") and pûer ("which was"). It refers to the shallow areas of the interior of Brazil where indigenous agriculture was made.

It originates with the fugitives of slavery, who often used the undergrowth to escape the pursuit of the captains of the bush. These were the first capoeiristas.

Later, still in the colonial period, the negroes will disguise the capoeira introducing him mimics, dances and songs. All this served to resist the repression of the Imperial Police and the Republican Militia.

Capoeira was a prohibited practice in Brazil until 1930 until it was recognized as a symbol of Brazilian identity. In 2014, the Wheel of Capoeira was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.

The two main types of capoeira are Angola and Regional.

Blows

Capoeira is characterized by agile and intricate strokes and movements. Taking advantage of mainly kicks and creeps, in addition to heads, knees, elbows and acrobatics in ground or air, are often done near the ground or upside down.

Therefore, capoeira is a fight of defense and attack in which the opponents use the feet and the head. The hands are rarely used, but in effect for both attack and defense.

Features

One characteristic that distinguishes capoeira from other fights is the fact that it is accompanied by music.

It is music that decides the rhythm and style of the game, which is practiced during the course of the capoeira roda, a circle of people where capoeira is played.

Thus, capoeiristas line up on the capoeira wheel clapping their hands in the rhythm of the berimbau while singing the capoeira music for the two practitioners to play.
