The United States Department of Defense said on Tuesday it had detected a suspected substance in two envelopes of correspondence and suspected that they may contain ricin, a deadly poison extracted from castor bean.

"The envelopes were taken by the FBI this morning for further analysis," said Rob Manning, director of the Defense Press Operations Center.

Department of Defense spokesman Chris Sherwood was quoted by the Military Times as saying the substance may be ricin.

Sherwood explained that the mail was addressed to an individual who works in the Department of Defense, but he did not name the person.

US media reported that the two letters were addressed to Secretary of Defense James Mattis and the head of the Department of Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson.

Manning said the FBI is investigating the incident.
