Trump after attack on synagogue in Pittsburgh: 'US must toughen death penalty'
The president of the United States considers the possibility of introducing the death penalty for similar crimes to the shootings in the Tree of Life synagogue, registered today in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
President Donald Trump suggested making US laws more stringent for perpetrators who committed mass shootings, including the introduction of the death penalty, Reuters reported.
"When people [commit mass shootings], they must receive the death penalty ... They [the Congress] must put the death penalty in vogue," he said.
At the same time, Trump dismissed claims that the attack was related to a supposed loosening of US gun control laws. He expressed the view that the attack could have ended differently if the synagogue had armed guards inside. According to the news agency, Trump added that armed security inside places of worship is "certainly an option."
He took the opportunity to report hate crimes occurring in the US and ask for a change in the current scenario.
"It's a terrible thing that's happening to hatred in our country and, frankly, all over the world. Something has to be done," he said.
At least four deaths were confirmed so far in the shooting. The gunman, allegedly armed with an AR-15 rifle, opened fire as he shouted "all these Jews must die." The suspect in the attack has already been arrested by the police. The exact number of victims remains unknown.
