Saudi Arabia prepares to admit Khashoggi death, TV station says
The Saudi Arabian government is preparing to admit that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died during an interrogation that "ended badly," the US television network CNN reported.
"Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that Khashoggi has been killed," newspaper sources said, saying the killing occurred because of "an interrogation that ended badly."
Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who has lived in the United States since 2017, was reported missing on Oct. 2.
The journalist was recorded by cameras while entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
According to his partner, a Turkish citizen with whom he was to marry, Khashoggi was invited to the consulate to obtain the documents necessary for his marriage and she stood outside the building waiting for him.
After five hours, one of the officials at the consulate told the woman that her fiancé had already left.
Riad says that Khashoggi disappeared after leaving the consulate and his diplomatic legation cooperates with the Turkish authorities to clarify the circumstances of the journalist's disappearance; the surveillance cameras allegedly did not work that day.
