Washington - US President Barack Obama congratulated Thursday the musician and songwriter Bob Dylan, one of his "favorite poets", after being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.

"Congratulations to one of my favorite poets, Bob Dylan for a Nobel deserved," said the leader on his Twitter account.

Obama also shared a list of songs from one of the most influential living musicians in the world, with hits like "Knockin 'on Heaven's Door", "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Like a Rolling Stone."

In 2012, Obama awarded Dylan the Medal of Freedom in a ceremony at the White House in which he highlighted the unique voice of the singer "redefined the message am music carries and the way in which (the art) messes with people's feelings."

Obama said that "there is no one more giant in the American music history," as demonstrated by the influence of letters and Dylan music on generations of musicians in all kinds of genres.

According to the jury of the Swedish Academy that awards the prestigious prize, Dylan deserves the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 for "having created a new poetic expression in the great tradition of American song."
