US 'behind the Venezuelan opposition', they 'do not want dialogue'
The Venezuelan president has chosen a rather lenient foreign policy, but it seems that Donald Trump does not give in to it, at least according to his statements.
Vladimir Travkin, editor-in-chief of Latinskaya Amerika magazine (Latin America in Russian), published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, comments on the subject for the Russian service.
The expert said that Trump is an unpredictable person, so it is unclear how he evaluates this policy of Maduro. Recently, the US president has stated that he does not exclude any variant, including military means, to pressure the Venezuelan regime.
The US is the largest buyer of Venezuelan oil, which is very important for this country. But Venezuelans, already under the administration of Hugo Chávez, began appreciating the natural wealth of their country, says Travkin.
Therefore, Venezuela has restricted the activity of several US companies, which they did not like. The US, for its part, has begun to act using various means to try to ignite the discontent within the country, using pressure against the Venezuelan bourgeoisie, which has direct ties with the US and is mainly concerned with the oil sector.
Travkin reminds us that the US is itself an oil producer, but it does contain the extraction of its oil, which, by the way, is in historically Latin American territory and that the US has taken to Mexico.
"They do not use their deposits at full capacity, but if they want, they can replace oil imports from Venezuela," Travkin said, adding that for Venezuelans this situation will be serious.
This situation could significantly worsen the economic difficulties in Venezuela, which are now observed because of the low price of oil in the world market. In exchange for oil exports, Venezuela buys foodstuffs and light industry products abroad.
Recently, Trump stated, but here he referred to the issue of US military presence in Afghanistan, that US forces will remain in this country to "fight terrorism." At the same time the US president stated that the US will not repeat its mistakes and will no longer impose its model of democracy on third countries.
Vladimir Travkin thinks this is an empty statement. "Words, the wind takes," said the expert, adding that he would like to be mistaken.
The expert said that Maduro is a good diplomat and a wise politician who tries to choose a peaceful course to solve the crisis. Travkin hopes that the US will react positively to these attempts and that they will give up the will to make Venezuela fight with its neighbors in Latin America.
The expert said that it is now early to talk about the positive effects that brings the Constituent to the life of the country. Parliament, controlled by the opposition, continues to try to overthrow Maduro before the end of his term.
"Maduro said that we must solve the political crisis through dialogue," said the expert, adding that this is not empty words and that the Venezuelan president says this sincerely. "The opposition itself is not ready for dialogue, we must not forget that behind it lies the United States," concluded Travkin.
