The US Air Force used a secret air base in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for combat missions and only now has its existence become public, Military.com reports. For the first time in a decade, the US has openly acknowledged the existence of an "undeclared" basis.

It is the Al-Dhafra air base in the UAE used by the US Air Force in its missions against the Daesh (a terrorist organization banned in Russia and in several other countries).

The military unit stationed at the base is the 380 Air Expeditionary Wing, formed in 2002 to support US operations in Afghanistan.

The base specializes in refueling and logistical support.

Al-Dhafra's planes are now carrying out reconnaissance missions as well as attack and air support missions in Iraq and Syria, Military.com quoted base commanders as saying.

The military activities of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing had not received much media attention until the US embassy in the Arab country decided to officially reveal the nature of the base.

In addition to airplanes, drones and fuel reserves, the base has its own operations control center, which coordinates refueling of US aircraft in the area with other air bases in the Middle East.
