Mattis and Poroshenko talk about sending arms to 'defend' Ukraine
The United States is considering sending lethal weapons to Ukraine and intend to continue to support the country in defending its territory and its population, United States Secretary of Defense James Mattis said in a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
Mattis, who is in Kiev, promised to present concrete recommendations on the future policy in Ukraine for US leadership upon returning to Washington.
Poroshenko, for his part, preferred to refrain from discussing the potential supply of weapons until the final announcement of the US government. The Ukrainian president added that he was happy with the general state of relations between Ukraine and the United States.
Mattis announced that Washington has already approved the supply of products and technologies worth $ 175 million to Ukraine, including special equipment that enhances the country's defense capability.
The US defense secretary also said that Washington would maintain support for Kiev in its efforts to defend the country and the people and expressed support for the country's defense sector reforms, adding that Washington hoped that Ukraine would implement all the requirements for Accession to NATO.
In July, Poroshenko signed a bill passed by parliament on June 8, formalizing the country's intention to join NATO as a priority of foreign policy in Kiev.
