US to take on NATO air policing mission in the Baltic countries
As of September, US Air Force F-15 Eagle and 1 fighters will carry out the NATO air policing mission in the Baltic countries from the base area in the Lithuanian city of Siauliai.
Since May, the Polish Air Force has been performing this function with the help of four F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters.
"The NATO air policing mission in the Baltic states will be held at the Siauliai military base on August 30. The Polish contingent, consisting of four F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters, will be replaced by the Northern Air Force contingent American fighter with F-15 Eagle fighters, "the statement from the Ministry of Defense of Lithuania says.
According to ministry data, from September 1 the mission will be carried out by the US military currently installed in Britain, more precisely at Lakenheath military base.
"This is the fifth time that the US Air Force will carry out such a mission in the Baltic States." The US contingent previously participated in air policing missions in the region in 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2014, "the ministry said.
The respective states do not have airplanes suitable for air patrolling, so since April 2004 (following their accession to NATO), airspace surveillance has been carried out by airplanes from member countries of the Atlantic Alliance in accordance with the principle of rotation . The fighters are installed in Lithuania at the airfield near the town of Siauliai.
