After the end of excesses year government encourages English to pass in January without alcohol
The end festivities of year usually means nights of excesses for many people. In contrast, at least in England, the month of January has been increasingly associated with a break period in drunkenness.
Public service English Health is encouraging citizens to participate in another edition of the "Dry January" (or dry January, in free translation).
The volunteer experience, winning fans every year, is to spend the whole month without drinking a drop of alcohol.
During December, on average, the British consume 41% more alcohol than in other months of the year.
In 2014, a study at the University of Sussex followed 900 volunteers who took up the proposal of "dry January."
The results showed that quitting alcohol for a month can change the way people drink the long run - they would start eating smaller quantities and become drunk less frequently.
After six months, 72% of the participants reduced the excessive consumption of alcohol and 4% had not returned to drink.
Participants were also more inclined to refuse alcoholic beverages at social events.
Change of habit
At the time, psychology professor Richard De Visser, responsible for research, told the BBC that "the most interesting thing is that these changes in alcohol consumption were also perceived in people who were unable to complete the entire month without drinking."
"Even if participants do not reach the end of the 31 days successfully, it is usually noted a significant reduction in the volume of alcohol they eat."
Most of the supporters of "dry January," also reported positive effects after teetotaler month, including improved sleep, weight loss and more available.
More than three quarters of them said they saved money and felt well-being of "mission accomplished".
Expecialistas highlighted, after the search, the abrupt cut in the consumption of álgool can help people to "reset" their relationship with alcohol, whose consumption is related to over 60 medical conditions, including cancer, depression and dementia.
Currently, the page Dry January on Facebook is followed by over 40 thousand people.
For 2016, the organizers encourage fans to share the decision with close people and encourage friends, families and co-workers to participate.
