North Korea opens dams on the border with South Korea

Zona desmilitarizada que divide a Coreia do Sul e Coreia do Norte

North Korean officials opened floodgate floodwaters on Monday and released water on the border with South Korea without warning, reports Yonhap.

The level of waters in a border river between the two Koreas has risen "dangerously" after North Korean officials opened floodgate floodwaters near the border on Monday, according to the Yonhap news agency.

At 5:00 PM local time, the levels of the Imjin River, near the Pilseung Bridge, rose to 5.97 meters.

The increase will be considered critical if it reaches the 7.5 meter level.

The South Korean authorities have detected this water discharge, and Pyongyang has not made any prior notification, the agency said.

The North Korean dyke's water discharge is dangerous for those living in low-lying areas along the course of the river in South Korea. In 2009, six South Koreans died when North Korea did the same - opened Dock gates without prior notice.
