Sex, the 'favorite' theme of Latin American characters in the cinema
A group of scientists analyzed nearly 1,000 scripts available on The Daily Script and IMSDb portals and found out how stereotypes about women, race, and aging are created and enhanced in Western movies.
In order to carry out the study, the authors of the Viterbi School of the University of Southern California developed a quantitative method that, together with the existing tools of cognitive linguistics, allowed to analyze more than 53,000 dialogues of these scripts and over 7,000 characters.
The results showed that the female characters are usually "more positive and emotional and also more related to family values". At the same time, male actors tend to talk about their achievements, use obscene language, and talk about death. African American characters often pronounce more profanity, while Latin Americans talk about sex and sexuality more often.
In addition, the older the hero, the more he mentions religion. The study also shows that in the movies, male characters speak twice as often as female characters.
The film production teams were also studied. In this case, men also numerically outnumber women. Thus, male directors are 12 times more likely to make films, male writers are seven times more likely to participate in projects, and there are three times as many male producers as females.
The study was published in the journal Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL).
