What is the greatest threat to human life?

A solidão pode matar (literalmente)

Social isolation and loneliness are a greater threat to people than obesity. The impact of these factors on society is growing more and may represent a serious problem.

This is the conclusion of the American psychologists at Brigham Young University. The study's press release was posted on the EurekAlert!

According to scientists, relationships with other people are a fundamental human need. It is very important for both psychological well-being and survival.

The scientists performed two meta-analyzes, systematizing in each of them the results of dozens of studies. The first one incorporated almost 150 scientific studies, covering a total of 300,000 volunteers. As has been revealed, strong social bonds contribute to a 50% reduction in the risk of early death. The second meta-analysis verified the results of 70 studies involving more than 3 million people from Europe, Asia, North America and Australia.

According to the scientists' findings, loneliness and social isolation further increase the risk of early death compared to other factors, including obesity.

Scientists believe that the health care system must take into account the influence of social ties on the health of the population.
