A new assessment sets for the first time, the United States as a threat to national security of Russia, signaling a deterioration in relations with the West in recent years.

The document "On the National Security Strategy of the Russian Federation" was signed by President Vladimir Putin on New Year's Eve. It replaces the 2009 version approved by the then president and current prime minister, Dmitry Medvedev, who had mentioned neither the United States nor NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

According to the document, Russia managed to increase its role in solving global problems and international conflicts. Such prominence, according to the report, caused a reaction by the West.

"The strengthening of Russia takes place in a context of new threats to national security, which has complex nature and interrelated," says the document.

Conducting an independent policy, "both national and international," caused the "opposition of the US and its allies, struggling to maintain dominance in global affairs," according to the document.
