According to the scientists, the number of people with total blindness may triple by 2050.

The number of blind people will increase to 115 million by 2050, compared with 36 million today due to the aging of the world's population, according to a study published in the medical journal Lancet Global Health.

"Of the 7.3 billion people on Earth, 36 million were blind by 2015, demographic changes will result in a significant increase in blind or visually impaired people, for example by 2020 the number of blind people will increase to 38 , 5 million and by 2050 to 115 million, "the scientists said.

The largest number of blind or visually impaired people are recorded in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

An analysis of data collected between 1990 and 2015 in 188 countries showed that more than 200 million people currently suffer from severe visual disturbances.

It is assumed that the number of patients with such problems may exceed 550 million by 2050.
