The most misogynist laws in the world

At least 44 countries detriment of women in their constitutions; know the most sexist laws of the world.

machismo

Many people say that gender inequality is no more that machismo is a thing of the past. It would be nice if it were so, but this is not true. Worldwide, there are still laws that discriminate against women in many different ways - from victim blaming in cases of rape and abuse to the prohibition of simple actions, such as driving or wear long pants.

It was even to be an outdated chat. 20 years ago, 189 countries signed a UN platform called Beijing Platform for Action, in order to discuss and repeal laws that were based on gender. However, since only half of them managed to partially reduce the sexism of their constitutions. To combat this, the NGO Equality Now has created a list of the most absurd laws that are in effect today. Meet some of the countries that perpetuate the machismo of constitutional order.

Where the boss's husband

Marriage in Sudan only a legal guardian permitting. Without his permission, no woman can marry. After the wedding, the "guard" the woman goes to her husband - and must obey him.

Just as Yemen wives. The law there requires women to satisfy her husband in bed, she wants it or not, when he desired. It is also he who decides the professional way your wife will follow.

The thing even more complicated in other countries. In Nigeria, the husband can beat his wife to "fix it." In Afghanistan, women only leave home if the husband permits. In the Congo, they can only sign contracts, either to hire a telephone service or rent a house, if the husband is present. The same happens in Nicaragua, Guinea and Mali.

In Mali, in fact, a woman must wait three months to get married after divorce or her husband's death. While men can marry again whenever they want. In Japan, the required space between a wedding and another is six months.

Speaking of divorce, in some places, such as Israel, this right is granted only to men. In Algeria they even manage to seek separation, provided that they pay some money to them.

Where the law defines the employment of women
There are even constitutions that define what jobs a woman can or can not accept. In China, they can not work in mining - is forbidden to them to do a lot of physical effort. Russia has a list of 456 types of work that women can not do, also linked to physical capacity. In Madagascar, women can not work at night, only "family farms."

Where femicide is worth less
"Honor crimes" are those made to "clean up the honor" of a man betrayed. It may seem a medieval thing, but there is still - and with relatively lenient sentence in some countries. In Syria, a man who kills his wife, mother or sister to have found a "tort" or immoral can take a maximum of seven years in prison. In Egypt, men receive lower sentences where the killings are the honor than any other serious crime.

Where the word woman is worth less than a man
In Iran, as in Pakistan, the testimony of a woman is worth at least than the man. Any crime must have at least two male witnesses for the testimony to be valid. In cases of zina (sex crime outside marriage), livat, tafkhiz or musaheqeh (criminal forms of homosexual relationship), there must be four witnesses men.

Where women can not drive or use certain clothes
In Saudi Arabia, women can not even take driver's license. It is that so, with all this freedom, it would be easier for them to meet with men privately (a crime called "khilwa") or leave the hijab (Islamic headscarf). And if that happened, the number of rapes could increase - their fault, of course.

In Sudan, the problem lies elsewhere: Muslim women can be sentenced to the lash for wearing trousers, which are considered immodest clothing. These types of prohibition are ways to blame the woman, not the man, abuse and even rape by.

Where rape is acceptable
In many countries, rape is not punished in some situations. This usually happens when the husband is the aggressor. In the Bahamas, for example, a man can have sex without consent with his wife if she is over 14 years old - in Singapore and India, the law is similar, but the minimum ages are 13 and 15, respectively.

Another common situation is the punishment be revoked or minimized if the rapist marries the victim after the act: in Lebanon, the law simply ignores the crime when the perpetrator asks the woman in marriage, even in cases where rape is combined with kidnapping. In Malta, as in Palestine, the punishment of the rapist is diminished if he intends to marry the victim and void if the marriage takes place.
