Maduro says he's proud of US sanctions: 'I'm not afraid'
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has declared himself "proud" of the fact that he has been targeted by US sanctions. Senator Marco Rubio, however, warned that Trump will impose more if Maduro decides to continue with the Constituent Assembly.
"I am not afraid of the [US] empire, I am independent president of a free country." They imposed sanctions against me because of the free election of an institution such as the National Constituent Assembly? I am proud of these sanctions, "Maduro said Monday At the event in Caracas, quoted by Globovision TV.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump plans to impose additional economic sanctions on Venezuela if the leader meets with the National Constituent Assembly, according to US Senator Marco Rubio.
"The sanctions imposed on Nicolás Maduro are guaranteed today," Rubio said on Monday. "However, I remain confident that the president will maintain his clear commitment to impose economic sanctions on the regime if they convene the illegitimate Constituent Assembly."
According to the US Treasury Department, Maduro's assets in the United States will be frozen and US citizens will be barred from doing business with it. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin underlined in a press release that the Trump government would continue to monitor the situation in Venezuela and could add further sanctions against the Maduro regime.
Last Sunday, the Maduro government held elections to elect delegates to a Constituent Assembly that will rewrite the country's Magna Carta. Several people died during the protests against the vote. The United States and other nations opposed the elections, with Trump warning that Washington would take economic action against Caracas if the plan progressed.
