Trump will not like it: Journal gives US recipe to stem the North Korean threat

In an editorial published on Tuesday, the US newspaper The New York Times gave the revenue it deems most appropriate for the United States to deal with North Korea amid a worsening crisis that lasts months between the two countries.

According to the publication, the Republican approach to the North Korean question "has been failing" so far, and that the tactic of blaming China for the lack of containment of Pyongyang's nuclear and military program also yielded few results.

"Mr. Trump, in fact, insisted in early January that such [intercontinental ballistic] missiles would not happen." Well, it happened twice, "quips the newspaper, which has been accused by Trump on several occasions of alleged news that would be false, in the view of the Republican.

In the face of the growing threat that North Korea poses to the United States and its allies in Asia - South Korea and Japan - it is time for the White House to change its approach to Pyongyang. Either that, or Trump runs the risk of failing like some predecessors.

"North Korea and its nuclear program, a long and complex challenge without a secure solution, is becoming exponentially worse," the editorial continues, acknowledging that Beijing could indeed do more, but it is time for Trump to take the reins .

For the newspaper, the appropriate recipe to be followed by the White House must be the diplomat.

"Sanctions alone are not the answer. Mr. Trump must face the reality that he can not resolve this crisis by proxy, that he must intervene directly and that he must do so soon [...]. What would such direct intervention entail? To begin with, Mr. Trump should abandon the fury and send Secretary of State Rex Tillerson or some other high-level envoy to Pyongyang in order to explore whether there is any basis for the negotiations. In May, the president raised the possibility of meeting the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, himself "in the right circumstances" to defuse tensions, "the text said.

For the publication, the North Korean regime has already shown signs that it would agree to negotiate, based on expert opinion. However, the US should stop with the "unrealistic" rhetoric that they would only agree to talk to Pyongyang if the country gave up its nuclear program.

"Conversations should begin without preconditions; What is most urgent is to stop the progress of the program, "says the newspaper, for whom all doubts about North Korea can only be clarified" if anyone asks them. "
