Good news for back pain sufferers
Relief for back pain sufferers looks set to be in the offing.
Thousands of people suffer from chronic back pain and there was encouraging news for them this week when an Irish medical firm, Mainstay Medical, announced that its new treatment for chronic back pain could be available to patients next year.
The company has created a device called ReActiv8 that is implanted in the back. The idea is that the implant will alleviate pain by restoring control to the muscles that stabilise the lumbar spine.
A recent trial was carried out with long-term sufferers of lower back pain, all of whom had tried physical therapy and 70% of whom were using oipoids for the pain.
Results for the trial, which are based on data from the first 47 back pain sufferers to be implanted with the device, showed that nearly two-thirds had shown clinically-important improvements in their pain and 67% revealed a noticeable benefit in quality of life.
