ST PETERSBURG, THE CAPITAL OF Russian Tsars

Russian city of impressive features. Strong. Elegant. And cold. Endless and freezing winter nights. But with long days in the summer time - the famous "White Nights" of Dostoevsky's novel. Situated on the banks of the River Neva, St. Petersburg was built by Tsar Peter I - the Great in 1703, just to be the capital of the czars. And so glamorous lived among canals and bridges, for over two hundred years until the end of the empire of the czars. Then it was taken by Hitler and remained surrounded by the Germans for 900 days (1941-1944). Many people died of hunger and cold during this period. It was a difficult stage. But the imperial city did not surrender. It changed its name a few times as the political tide sent: Petergrado, Leningrad, St. Petersburg. Last name, also has "Venice of the North" - for its canals. Today is the fourth largest city in Europe, the second largest in Russia and boasts a well-deserved title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

HERMITAGE MUSEUM

Choose where to start to unravel the city is easy. The great Hermitage museum - one of the world's largest - is undoubtedly the best starting point. Its collection has more than 3 million pieces of all ages, styles and cultures, distributed in 10 buildings. The museum's heart is the Winter Palace. It took eight years to complete, from 1754 to 1762. The imperial halls are drives. The palace has 1,057 rooms, 117 staircases, 1786 doors and 1945 windows. These numbers - no simple ones - give an idea of its magnificence. After the construction of this first part of the palace, Catherine the Great ordered it built the Hermitage. This place is designed as a resting area soon became a private museum that held the collections of Catherine. It did not take long for the Imperial Collection take such volume that new wings had to be built to house his collection. Today, the museum holds a huge complex, boasts spectacular lounges and fantastic works.

If you have a full day available to him, it will still not see everything. Select the areas of greatest interest, mark on the map and get organized to speed up the time.

WALK, WALK AND WALK

To continue exploring the city the best option is to walk away with a map "in English" on hand. The order is to walk. Taxis are rare. Buses are viable, especially if you find someone who speaks English and help in the itinerary. Metro not tested. The city is great, but the historical center can be traveled on foot for those who enjoy walking. The dead of winter is a great limiter. Try to go during the warmer months (May to September). Thus, the days will be huge and pleasant temperature to circulate.

The Nevskiy Prospekt street is the best point of reference - stretches for 4.5 kilometers. It crosses the city from east to west and boasts some of the most beautiful buildings, churches and city bridges. It starts at the Admiral Plaza, home to the Ministry of the Navy (next to the Hermitage Museum) - a grand yellow building U-shaped, with a golden tower of 1704, which is the second highest in the city (it was built to be strong and shipyard) involves the Railway Station and ends in a monastery.

On the left, the slender golden tower of the Ministry of the Navy and the dry trees of the Admiral Square, practically next to the Hermitage Museum.

Close there, be sure to visit the St. Isaac's Cathedral, one of the largest temples in the world. Its interior is loaded with gold and rare marbles. Its facade is lined with colonnades and decorated with 350 pictures. Can you climb up to the dome of the church and see the city from above. The view is worth the staircase. The value of the ticket to the church + climb to the summit = 400 rubles.
