ICC: Tourab accounts for destruction of cultural heritage




Suspected of having participated in the destruction of mausoleums in northern Mali, in 2012, Ahmad Al Faqi appeared today for the first time before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

The alleged Islamic extremist, better known as Abu Tourab is alleged to have participated in the destruction of religious monuments in Timbuktu, after the city making UNESCO World Heritage Site by radicals linked to al-Qaeda.

It is the first time that the ICC investigates a case linked to the destruction of religious buildings and historical monuments. And Abu Tourab - brought to justice by the authorities of Niger - the first to account for this type of crime in The Hague.

According to UNESCO, the cultural heritage destruction can be considered a war crime under the Hague Convention of 1954.
