Dasabamento no Quênia

Nairobi--at least eight people died and dozens were injured due to the collapse of asix-story building in Nairobi, capital of Kenya, in the midst of the heavy rains that fell in the city in the last few hours.

Emergency teams have rescued 130 people, but it is not known how many may still be buried, so don't rule out that the number of victims will increase in the next few hours.

Residential building came down last night in the Huruma, in the northeast of the Kenyan capital, one of the most punished by the storm.

The President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, was on the scene of the incident and asked the police to stop the owner of the building, according to Government sources had no authorization from City Hall to be built.

The head of emergency operations for the Red Cross, Mahdi Mohammed, explained that the rescue works are difficult because they cannot be used heavy equipment such as backhoes.

"If they are used, the debris can fall apart, and you have to be very careful," he explained.

In addition, rescuers told lived moments "chaotic" because access to the area of thebuilding was very complicated because of floods.

The families who lived in the building and nearby houses were sheltered in a school.

According to the local press, 15 people died in the last hours in Nairobi, including eight who were in the building due to the rains.

Last night, the Red Cross pulled out of 1000 people in Mathare fence and Mukuru, two of Nairobi slums whose houses and shacks were at risk of collapse.
