The SpaceX, space transportation company of billionaire Elon Musk, announced this Wednesday (27) which plans to launch its own spacecraft to Mars until 2018. This isthe most ambitious goal ever released by a private aviation company, which in this case is funded by donations from billionaires.

The unmanned mission would be, with the goal of mapping the red planet and calculate the possibility of installation of a human colony, said Musk on his Twitter account.

According to Nasa, the rocket takes about eight months to reach Mars ' orbit, trip extremely expensive. The SpaceX, however, recently broke the paradigm of space transportation when, in April, the company landed a reusable rocket on a platform controlled by robots. This would cause the same spacecraft could make return trips several times, which does not happen in the current projects of the American space agency.

Nasa has already announced its own mission to Mars. The goal of the Government institution would send people to the planet until 2030, but with the budget cuts on space research announced by the Government of the United States, billionaires likeMusk, Jeff Bezos, of Amazon.com, and Richard Branson, of Virgin, ended up creatingtheir own independent funds for studies.

Musk said that Nasa would offer technical support, such as communication equipment, but that the mission would continue being exclusive of SpaceX.
