Apple iPhones robot dismounts in 11 seconds

The function is noble: to help the company to reuse components

Apple introduced this week an industrial robot that can disassemble an iPhone in 11 seconds.

Called Liam, the unit has 29 arms equipped with tools such as drills and screwdrivers, and will be used in the company's components recycling program, which aims to reuse parts and reduce the environmental impact of smartphones disposal.

The company announced in yesterday's event, when it introduced the iPhone SE and Pro iPad 9.7 inches, a iPhones collection program for recycling called Renew? and Liam will be responsible for giving the correct order for each unit received. The owners of the brand devices may discard them in Apple Stores, physical stores of Apple (there are only two in Brazil, one in Rio and another in São Paulo).

Thanks to the speed of Liam, Apple estimates it will dismantle 350 iPhones per hour. On this account, per year, will be dismantled 1.2 million smartphones.

During the process, Liam designed components for their proper destinations, such as a bucket or a specific storage area.

The materials used in the manufacture of the iPhone can be sold to recycling companies. Some of the substances are aluminum, copper, nickel, cobalt and tungsten? because of popular conflicts in Congo.
