However, from Beijing to Guangzhou from Shanghai to Urumqi, all Chinese know this soprano, brigadier general in the army, star for 25 years of state television, whose last program in 2008, was attended by impressive 770 million viewers, the equivalent of four Brasis.
Xi Jinping became China's presidency in March 2013, since then, Peng preferred discretion to fame and his appearances are now in fashion reports that consider it a fashion icon that influences Chinese women with their style. In 2015, Forbes magazine listed her in 68th place in the ranking of the most powerful women in the world.
"Since the era of Mao, the women of senior Chinese leaders are no longer shown in public," he said in 2012, Zhang Yaojie, a researcher at the National Arts Academy, told AFP. Since the cruel Jiang Qing, the last wife of Mao Tse-tung, the "red empress" hated by the people for their mistakes and brutalities during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), women of Chinese leaders remained in the shadows.
Peng is different, charismatic. In old videos on the Internet, shows up a beautiful woman, thick black hair, high cheekbones and radiant smile. In military uniform, embroidered ethnic dress or long fuchsia robe, she sings honeyed melodies and folk songs with lyrics altered to glorify the Communist Party.

Ready to glorify the party
Peng came with only 14 years in Shandong University of Arts to study singing, specializing in traditional Chinese songs.
He joined the Army at 18 years building his name as an artist approved by the Communist Party, often appearing on state television to sing propaganda songs. "As a simple soldier, started thanks to his vocal talents to participate in Army shows to raise the morale of the troops," says his biography published in Sina and Baidu sites.
"Probably 90% of her songs are praise the Communist Party and the rest of celebrating our wonderful life," said music critic Qi Youyi the BBC sarcastically.

Peng appeared in nearly 50 countries such as USA, Japan and Austria, and received many awards. The presentation of the soprano in the premiere of New Year's gala program on CCTV (China Central Television) in 1983 made her a national celebrity.
In 1989, Peng sang for the soldiers a month after the massacre of Tiananmen Square. At the time, the pro-democracy movement was violently repressed by the Chinese People's Liberation Army, which left hundreds of dead students and residents.
But not everything is perfect
Peng Liyuan did not always have good relations with the Communist Party. Both her family as her husband were persecuted during the Cultural Revolution.
In an interview with Chinese television in 2004, Peng said his father was categorized as a "counterrevolutionary" because some of their relatives had served in the Taiwan Army. The father of the first lady was arrested and forced to clean public toilets.
Marriage with President
When Peng Liyuan Xi Jinping met in 1986, she was a famous singer. He divorced, was vice mayor of Xiamen City, in the southern province of Fujiano.
After a few months of dating, the two were married in September 1987. The couple's daughter, Xi Mingze, was born in 1992 and studied at Harvard in the US with false name.
When he finally retired in 2008 from presentations on television, many thought it made the decision to not affect the husband's role, less well known it: Xi had just come to the political office of the Communist Party.
Committed to humanitarian activities, Peng is since 2011 ambassador of the WHO (World Health Organization) AIDS and tuberculosis. In 2014, UNESCO named her special envoy to promote education for girls and women. She is also ambassador of the China Tobacco Control Association.
