How the black market of art?

Theft easy, guaranteed purchase and lax enforcement move the 3rd largest illegal market in the world

What is art? Be WHAT is in the interest of many people: the catalog of Interpol has more than 34,000 stolen works across the planet. Almost all filched simple and efficient: the average prevail, only 10% will be recovered. It is the 3rd largest illegal market in the world, behind only drugs and guns.

The harmonious work between alarms, cameras, proximity sensors and security guards would prevent or at least reduce much of these occurrences, but not every museum has all this infrastructure available. "It's easier to steal a museum than a bank," says Art Hostage, pseudonym of the author of a blog focused on crimes with works of art, which identifies itself as a clandestine former negotiator rehabilitated. "Not to mention the light punishment: US $ 1 million in cocaine gives a much greater penalty than $ 1 million in frames This encourages theft.."

But theft is only the first step of a large chain. According to the report Stealing History: The Illicit Trade in Cultural Material ( "Stealing History: The Illegal Market in Culture" without Brazilian edition), works of art and antiques stolen are used for money laundering. To complete the scheme still has the support of lax laws in some countries (see Table Stealing Beauty, right).

Learn how the scheme that supports the international art trafficking
THEFT

The scheme is simple, no Hollywood.
UNDER ARM
Sometimes just grab and go. In 1998, a man entered the room 67 of the Louvre Museum at lunch, with packed museum, took a Corot screen and sent. The thief and the work were never found.
HANDS UP
It is the most common form. It is easy two armed men surrender a security - that in many museums is instructed not to intervene, not to endanger valuable work.
THROUGH THE WINDOW
Yes, it happens. In 1994, thieves used a ladder found near a Norwegian museum to enter the window and take one of four versions of The Scream. They left a note: "Thanks for the poor security."
RECEPTION
Generally, art theft is ordered.
TRAFFIC
Works of art and antiques are an excellent investment for drug traffickers and other criminals. They can serve to legalize a fortune illegally obtained or as luxury bribery.
WASHING MONEY
It works like this: first, the dealer uses the money earned from drugs to order the theft of a valuable work. Then just put the work on a friend and auction money back pretty clean.
CURRENCY TRADING
There are also reports of traffickers who keep private collections as a precaution: when are the danger, using paintings, sculptures and antiques as treats for corrupt cops.
COLLECTOR
In other cases, the theft is commissioned by art collectors, people with taste and unscrupulous not mind having stolen works at home. Their collections are not public, but are open to those who consent to remain silent.
KIDNAPPING
As the saying goes, who plays with fire ends up burning: there are collectors who order reports theft and end up being stolen - or rather, have their works stolen kidnapped - and there can not even call the police.
DESTINY
lax laws guarantee a strong market.
POLICE
Interpol admits: 9 out of 10 recovered works are returned to the owners because they reappeared in the formal market, galleries and even museums.
LA WARRANTY ON IO

In Italy, accredited traders can, by law, always claim to not know that the work was stolen.
