US President Barack Obama mourned on Sunday the death of Nancy Reagan, responsible for "redefine the role of first lady" in the country and became, at the end of his life in "a voice to the millions of families" affected by the devastating Alzheimer's Disease.
In a statement, Obama and his wife, Michelle, offered their condolences to the Reagan family, dead today at age 94 due to a heart problem in his Los Angeles residence (California).
"Nancy Reagan once wrote that nothing could prepare someone to live in the White House. Of course, she was right. But we had advantage because we were fortunate to avail ourselves of your proud example and their warm and generous advice," said the leader and the first lady.
"Our first lady old redefined this role during his time here," he added.
Reagan Alzheimer
During his "long goodbye" to former President Reagan, who died in 2004, "turned into a voice speaking for millions of families suffering the effects of devastating and painful reality of Alzheimer's," said Obama.
From then "adopted a new role as an activist in favor of treatments that have the potential and the promise to improve and save lives," they added in reference to the defense of Nancy Reagan Research with stem cells, which caused clashes with President George W. Bush.
"We offer our sincere condolences to his children, Patti, Ron and Michael, and his grandchildren. We follow grateful for the life of Nancy Reagan, grateful for their advice, and pray for her husband and she are together again," the statement concludes distributed by the White House.
The First Lady between 1981 and 1989 will be buried next to her husband at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley (California), announced this institution.
