NATO quietly responds to Trump about the role of Alliance

Jens Stoltenberg secretário-geral da Otan

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, recalled Wednesday in Washington the support of the organization to the United States after the attacks of September 11, a discreet response to criticism of Donald Trump to the Atlantic Alliance.

"The first and only time that invoked the collective security clause (NATO) was after the 11 September 2001 attacks in support of the United States," he recalled Stoltenberg.

"It's an example of how Europeans are mobilized by the United States when it is necessary," he said.

NATO got involved after with the United States in Afghanistan to pursue al-Qaeda.

"More than 1,000 European and Canadian soldiers lost their lives in this country," he said.

The Republican candidate for the November presidential election Donald Trump multiplied in recent weeks criticism of NATO, an organization that believes "obsolete" and financed over the United States.

His main rival in the Republican primaries, Ted Cruz, did not join the criticism.

President Barack Obama, however, said on Monday that NATO remains a "pillar, a cornerstone" of US defense policy.

Europeans know that they must increase their military spending and less reliant on the United States, said Stoltenberg, before noting that for this reason "the 28 NATO members agreed in 2014 to improve investment in the defense area."
