Lochte signs advertising agreement with bullets manufacturer
Days after losing all his major sponsors, the American swimmer Ryan Lochte has signed an advertising agreement with a company that took advantage of the scandal involving the athlete in the Olympic Games Rio 2016.
Pine Bros. softish Throat Drops, which makes bullets cough, said he hired Lochte, 12-time Olympic medalist, for a television commercial and print ads.
Lochte lost its four main sponsors on Monday, including Speedo USA and Ralph Lauren, after his apology for having "exaggerated" about having been stolen during the Rio Games.
The Lochte's version of the incident caused embarrassment in Rio and angered Brazilian authorities, and the revelations about the episode --which put in doubt about what Lochte had contado-- dominated the media coverage of the first Olympics held in South America .
"We all make mistakes, but rarely are they analyzed the front pages of newspapers," he said the chief executive of Pine Bros softish Throat Drops, Rider McDowell, in a statement on Thursday.
"I am confident that fans of Pine Bros will support our decision to give a second chance to Ryan," he said.
Also on Thursday, Lochte was subpoenaed to testify in the case in which it is accused by the police of Rio false reporting crime, but he will not be forced to return to Brazil to provide information, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.
"There is no legal instrument to force him to return," the source said, adding that he may request the provision of evidence by rogatory letter. The source also noted that the false communication crime has no major implications, such as imprisonment, for example.
"This has all day ... It has a lot of noise, but will not give anything," he said. "No one is arrested by a low potential crime. The case has more impact and damage to his career than punishment or penalty."
