You did not notice this detail in "Silence of the Lambs"
As a legend on The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins suggested that his character, Hannibal Lecter, dressed in white hospital clothes to look more clinical and scary. Sites of trivia and internet forums claim that Lecter is afraid of the dentist, hence the idea.
This kind of story persists because it is too strange to be true.
But for confirmation, The Huffington Post sought Colleen Atwood, costume designer Oscar winner for 1991. Well movie ....
The clothing was white because Hopkins imagined that the cannibal was a "spiritual" person.
"He considered himself as spiritual Hannibal," Atwood said.
"In the cell with the white shirt, we were looking for something very sparse and almost spiritual, but when you're in jail there is not much choice," said Atwood, laughing.
Costume designer explained that Hopkins wanted to make sure that everything about the character was correct, including his clothes.
"The deal with Anthony is that [the clothes] had to fit in with the rest accurately," Atwood said. "Part of this character was accurate, then the shirt had to dress perfectly. What was minimalist in a way it was profoundly transformed in others. But all fit like a glove. "
Lecter is obviously terrifying, but know that Hopkins interpreted it as a spiritual figure certainly increases the feeling of uneasiness caused by cannibals. The world does not need a Church of Hannibal.
