Germany says that hundreds of refugees return to Turkey
Berlin - The German government estimated on Friday that hundreds of immigrants will be returned on Monday to Turkey under the agreement signed between that country and the EU to expel those who arrive irregularly to the Greek coast and have no right to asylum.
At a news conference in Berlin, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry, Tobias Plate, declined to offer concrete data, but advanced it will be "a non-negligible number of three digits."
According pointed out, the returns will affect citizens of different nationalities, not only Syrians.
The agreement with Turkey, criticized by several human rights organizations, entered into force on March 20 and since then all immigrants and refugees arriving from Turkey to Greece are immediately transferred to closed centers, waiting for the parliament in Athens today approve the law that allows the implementation of the agreement.
The German spokesman of Interior wanted to make clear that the agreement requires respect European and international law, which means that Turkey can in no case send people to receive from the EU to places considered "unsafe."
Amnesty International (AI) reported that Turkey has forced thousands of refugees to return to Syria in recent months and accused the EU of "ignore the purpose" "illegal" practices such by Ankara.
The deputy spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, Georg Streiter, declined to comment on the AI report, but said Berlin knows and investigates complaints of the organization.
