Indiana will risk their lives for gold with "Leap of Death"

Dipa Karmakar, ginasta da Índia, dia 31/07/2014

"Giving blood for the sport" is a phrase to be used with caution near the gymnasts in these Olympic Games. The first athlete to compete in Gymnastics Artistic by India just leaving for Rio - and her mission here is a challenge to give chills.

Dipa Karmakar, 22, is one of only five gymnasts in history to accomplish the Leap of Death. With the official name of Produnova, he is the most dangerous move of Gymnastics and the most difficult jump mode.

Any slightest mistake can lead to an injury to the neck or spine and a bad fall can be fatal.

To make Produnova, the gymnast jumps, makes a reversal and two deadly grouped forward. In layman's terms: it jumps forward, supporting both hands on the table (reversal) and two complete somersaults in the air with legs bent.

The problem is that all this requires an immense force. The athlete needs to get on the trampoline with a lot of speed, gain enough momentum when the slope on the table and be high enough to make the two.

If you do not get enough time, will make a mortal and a half ... and landed head, not feet.

The first gymnast to accomplish this feat was the Russian Yelena Produnova in 1999. Since then, few gymnasts accepted the challenge to realize it and even fewer succeeded.

Besides Produnova, the ones that were able to complete the jump in official competitions were the Dominican Yamilet Peña Abreu, the Egyptian Fadwa Mahmoud, the Uzbek Oksana Chusovitina (which, with 41, also come to Rio for its 7th Olympics) and, of course the very Dipa Karmakar.
