Obama denounces Trump's inexperience in foreign policy

Barack Obama, presidente dos EUA

The US president, Barack Obama denounced Sunday "lack of preparation" Donald Trump shows in terms of foreign policy referring to his recent words about the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

The Republican candidate for the White House said in an interview with New York Times that if the Baltic countries, members of the Atlantic alliance, were attacked by Russia, could only be an intervention by the United States after verifying that these countries "respected their obligations".

"There is a huge difference between challenging our European allies to fulfill their defense spending, especially when Russia becomes more aggressive, and say 'so what? We can not disregard the central commitment of the most important alliance in the history of the world'" , said Obama in an interview published on Sunday on "Face the Nation" on CBS station.

One of the basic principles of NATO states that an attack against one member is an attack against all allies - a point that the United States is worth after the attacks of September 11, 2001 and that justified NATO's intervention in Afghanistan.

Recalling that this principle was "the cornerstone" of whatever American foreign policy since World War II, and President Obama opined that the Republican candidate's words demonstrate a lack of knowledge of the subject.

"I do not have a sufficient understanding to say that the United States can not keep their solemn commitment to protect allies who were on our side after 11 September (...) clearly demonstrates the lack of preparation in terms of foreign policy," He assured the president.
