WTO Director does not enter into polemics with Donald Trump

Donald Trump

The director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Brazilian Roberto Azevedo, said on Wednesday he does not want to enter into polemics with the Republican candidate for president of the United States, Donald Trump, on a possible exit of the United States organization.

"I have no intention to start a discussion on this subject," Azevedo said Wednesday in Geneva, during a press conference, "because I am not a candidate" for president of the United States.

"Everyone knows what I think of the WTO, its importance to international trade and job creation," he added.

Roberto Azevedo will present a second term as WTO Director-General after completing the current, in September 2017.

Donald Trump said in an interview broadcast last Sunday on a possible US withdrawal from the WTO if elected president.

"We will renegotiate or get out" of the WTO, he told a reporter on NBC.

"These trade agreements are a disaster. The World Trade Organization is a disaster," said Trump.

The Republican candidate denounced on several occasions the international trade, which he introduces unfair competition with certain countries, showing their distrust of organizations such as the WTO and trade agreements as being in talks between the US and European Union (TTIP ).
