North Korean diplomat flees embassy in London
London - A North Korean diplomat fled the embassy of his country in London with his wife and children seeking asylum in another country, said on Tuesday the British broadcaster "BBC".
Thae Yong-ho, who for ten years worked in the English capital as deputy ambassador, was also responsible for promoting North Korea's image in the UK.
Besides Thae and ambassador, Hyon Hak Bong, four other people working in the North Korean diplomatic residence.
Neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the British North Korean embassy was also commented on the possible escape of the diplomat, who left his home in Ealing, west London, earlier this month and is untraceable.
This is the first time it happens a case like this since resumed diplomatic ties between the communist regime of North Korea and the United Kingdom 13 years ago.
According to the "BBC", Pyongyang would have asked to Thae Yong-ho to prepare a series of measures to counter the widespread view that it has in the UK on human rights violations in China.
"It is an important defection. If it were to be confirmed, it would be something very shameful for the regime," said John Nilsson-Wright, head of the Asia department at the laboratory of ideas London Chatham House.
"London was a diplomatic priority for North Korea for a long time and this is demonstrated by the high number of employees who are in the city and with the resources to maintain its presence here," said Nilsson-Wright.
